Description
12″ Suffolk Latch
Our antique iron Suffolk vintage black latch measures 12 inches and features black arrowhead design on either end of the old handle grip.
The set comes with both antique knock in and screw on staples to keep the traditional latch in place. The cottage knock in staple is the more traditional way of securing the latch bar but using the screw on staple can make fitting much easier. Matching screws are provided so you can choose either method.
The handle measures 30cm from top to bottom and the latch bar itself is 20cm long. The arrowheads themselves are 5.5cm wide and the handle stands 6cm proud of the door providing plenty of space to grasp it.
Our wrought iron Suffolk latches are all individually hand forged, and so they are similar but not identical. Each piece is hand finished and given a beeswax coating. All our hand-forged products are carefully aged. Once installed these products will look old and authentic.
Forging Our Latches
All our latches are hand forged by artisan smiths. We have found a small blacksmith shop that now produces the vintage black latch for us. Each latch is hand forged in the old traditional way on the anvil.
Once completed each latch is hand cleaned and hand polished. The latch is now ready to be dressed. To dress the latch it is treated with a natural layer of beeswax. The reason we use this wax is that it is an ancient form of preserving wrought iron. The wax penetrates into the small holes on the surface of the iron. This allows the wax to form a coating on the latch which, in turn, protects the iron from excessive rusting. The wax also helps to even out the colour of the iron. The latches will be mostly black but may have areas of golden brown on them.
A full set of screws will be provided with your order. These screws will be vintage cottage design with black slotted dome heads.
