Vintage Door Hinges
A pair of our rustic vintage door hinges. These are black iron rounded penny end T hinges antique with slot heads. Matching old fixing screws provide and the traditional hinge plate is pre-drilled for easy fixing. This cottage pair of hinges is 12 inches in length and ideally, the vintage door hinges should cover approximately over half the width of the door.
The rectangular hinge leaf measures 12cm by 3 cm and the decorative hinge leaf is 26cm long. The penny end measures 3.5cm wide.
Our rustic wrought iron door hinges are all hand forged. So though similar will not be identical. Each piece is hand finished and given a beeswax coating. All our hand-forged products are carefully aged for an authentic look.
Making Our Hinges
All of our hinges are hand forged. They are hand forged in the very old traditional way on the anvil. The hinges will show forging mark. These hinges are made by artisan blacksmiths in a small smiths shop for us. The blacksmiths that make these are as passionate about producing quality metalwork as we are and we are pleased to have found them.
Once the hinges have been forged they now need to be dressed. To dress the hinges they are first hand cleaned and then hand polished. The hinges are then dipped into natural beeswax. This again is a very old and traditional method of treating wrought iron. The wax has two functions. Firstly the wax will even out the colour of the iron. The hinge colour will be mainly black but may also have areas of golden brown. The wax seeps into the tiny holes on the surface of the iron and forms a layer over the entire surface. This layer of wax on the surface shields the iron from the air and therefore prevents excessive rusting.
