Forging Our Hinges
All of our hinges are hand forged. We have been fortunate to find a blacksmith’s shop that now makes these hinges for us. We searched for a long time before finding this highly skilled artisan. The hinges are hand forged in the traditional way on the anvil. The finished hinge will show these forging marks. Once each hinge has been forged it has to be dressed. To dress the hinge it is first hand cleaned and hand polished. Once this stage has been compleated the hinge is dipped in natural beeswax.
By treating each hinge with beeswax it gives the iron better qualities. Firstly the wax adheres to the surface of the iron by soaking into the tiny pores on the surface. This helps the wax to form a sealing coat over the hinge thus preventing excessive rust. The second main thing the wax does for the hinge is that it will even out the colour. The hinge will now be mainly black but may have areas of golden brown.
